The Elements of Construction family of furniture celebrates the invention of reinforced concrete 150 years ago, by revealing its inner beauty.
Reinforced concrete is a technique where concrete is cast around a metal grid. This connection gave humans the ability to work on an impressive big scale. It changed the world of architecture and thereby our surroundings. One element of this material is always hidden: Up until now, the steel reinforcement was hidden inside with one purpose only: to give the concrete strength. After experimentation, Willem van Hooff found a way to turn these roles inside out and bring the metal grid to the surface, giving it a complementary aesthetic, and a completely new function. The rough urban materials are now brought into our homes. Together the Elements of Construction pieces of furniture represent a city landscape, where Van Hooff's inspiration for this project started. Bringing the materials back to where they normally belong.
