The following is the artist statement:
In our present time, the primary focus of man has come to be wealth and material gain generated by science and technology. We are obsessed by our inventions and our success is based on the progress of these creations. Because of this focus, our lives have become enslaved by what has been created by our own hands.
My previous works have been based upon preconceived ideas. When I drew a line, the line was determined by structures and ideas of composition. It would take certain existing shapes and forms intended to the finished work. My recent work are different. The approach is different. Then I introduce color to it. While drying, the color flow freely and find their own shapes and forms. The resulting shapes and forms are always different and unpredictable. Once dry, they are unchangeable and irreversible. In this process, we have forgotten what it to be human. We have lost our humanity. This loss is reflected in our disregard of human lives. In this process, we have become characterized by greed and selfishness.
To change this direction of society, we must recover our humanity by returning to nature. No-Ja, an ancient Chinese philosopher of Zen, once said, “ Empty your mind from selfish ambition and greed. ” This philosophy has influenced greatly the thinking and history of China , Korea , and Japan . Another old saying states that man by the time he is in his fifties should have an understanding of the meaning of life and a deeper insight of the ways of the universe. That is a grand statement. However, as an artist of 60, I have come together grasp the meaning of art. My understanding of it is different than when I was younger. As I have lived a bit more of my life, I have learned that it is essential for me to first empty my mind in order to follow the rules of nature. There is something greater that governs us and our lives.
The shapes and forms of these works are comparable to each of our individual lives. Our lives are governed by nature ' s super power. We lives that have been given to us. We have not created them on our own; instead, we have been created. Through my work, I want to see harmony between humanity and nature. less
