About the artist.
Albert Berne (German/American 1877-1973) Schooled in music at the Cincinnati Conservatory, Berne studied piano in Berlin, Germany with Arthur Rubinstein. Here he experienced the radical ferment in the arts in Europe during the pre- WWI years. Later he returned to Cincinnati, where he was a baritone and teacher of music. At the age of 56, he began painting in earnest. Berne received instruction in painting at the Cincinnati Art Academy with Frank Myers and Carl Zimmerman, also studying with Harold Brett on Cape Cod.
His earliest works were representational, but as he grew older his paintings became more personal, more intense, and more abstract. His works in general reflect an influence of German Epressionism, with his last works showing his love for the Alpine mountains in their composition. Bibliography:Francis V. O'Conner, Albert Berne and the Completion of Being: Images of Vitality and Extinction in the Last Paintings of a Ninety-Six Year Old Man," in Aging, Death, and the Completion of Being, ed. David D. Van Tassel. "
After a serious illness, at age 96, he began a sequence of paintings where he painted one picture a day, or 147 paintings in 162 days. He died in 1973. The work of Albert Berne is held in numerous private collections in the U.S and Europe. less
