This large, rare and highly decorative 19th century red lacquer cabinet is called a “Wedding Cabinet.” In ancient China, these were made as dowries by families of brides, with size and embellishment an indication of the family’s wealth and social standing. The red paint symbolizes good luck and prosperity. This cabinet’s intricate and highly decorative carvings suggest it was made for a family of considerable standing.
This tall cabinet—of the largest and most decorative we’ve seen—was handcrafted from the core of an elm wood tree with the elegance of Ming dynasty simplicity. The cabinet’s structure, which is consistent with traditional, handcrafted Chinese furniture, confirms its authenticity: a molded top above a gilt frieze with two large, easily removable center doors and outer panels supported by wooden hinges, each carved and gilded with figural and landscape motifs. The doors open to reveal two shelves, four drawers and a secret compartment with great storage possibilities.
This solid piece, which was sourced from Shanghai, has been well-maintained in its beautifully-aged, original lacquer finish. Unlike many in this genre, the back of this massive cabinet has not been altered to accommodate modern electronics. The scale and magnificence of this very rare cabinet would make a stunning statement in a large reception or living area or serve as a functional bar or entertainment cabinet.
