This oil on canvas painting by Christopher Lane is very similar to one of his larger paintings that was displayed at the the San Francisco International Airport titled "Night Passage" (where the sun is in the top corner). In this one the sun seems to be rising from the bottom corner. This painting is signed on the back Christopher Lane S.F. and dated October 1977.
Artist Biography from Christopher Lane Studio:
Born in New York City in 1937. In 1955 graduates from High School of Music and Art in New York. Goes to Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont from 1955 to 1957. In the summer of 1957 goes to San Francisco and studies Brush Calligraphy with Zen Master Tobase. In Fall of same year goes to Mexico City for six months and sets up studio and studies at Escuela Esmeralda de Pintura et Sculptura. Goes to Paris from 1959-62 and paints there. Meets Alberto Giacometti. In 1961 travels to London and meets Helen Lessore, distinguished art critic and Director of the Beaux Arts Gallery and as a result is offered his first one-man exhibition in 1962. In 1964, while living in New York, is chosen by Frank O’Hara, Curator of Painting at the Museum of Modern Art to exhibit his paintings in a show at MoMA called “Landscapes by Eight Americans” which also travels throughout the United States and to Spoleto, Italy. In 1968 travels to Paris to study the work of the outsider artist Clement in Dubuffet’s l’Art Brut Collection. Spends two years working on the Clement series, inspired by his work. In 1968 begins a series of miniature paintings 1 and 3/4 “ X 2” that are exhibited in Houston and San Francisco. From 1970-1 lives in Holland in the province of Zeeland preparing for shows in New York and Japan. Moves to San Francisco in 1972 with his family. From 1977 to 79 works on a eighteen foot triptych, which is shown three years later at SFMoMA in a solo exhibition. In 1989 starts work on a sixteen-panel oil painting that takes a year to complete. In 1991 starts working and experimenting with slate from around the world including the United States, mainly incising and carving it. In 1995 invited to participate in an exhibition called “Americans in Paris” with two other American artists. Had four exhibitions in Tokyo in 1971, ’73, ’76 and at Tsukuba University in 1996. In 1999 begins a series of works on paper called “Texts” and in 2009 begins another series with sumi ink and brushes called “Calligraphicscapes.” From 1957 to the present, has participated in over twenty solo and fifty group exhibitions. less
