A very beautiful set of two faience wall plaques
Made of the tin-glazed earthenware known as Delft, they feature skillfully hand painted sceneries
Although various hues of blue and white are the predominant colors common in the Delft traditions, these plaques are polychrome with yellow, green, brown, black, pink and purple added to the palette
Shaped oval form with raised rims in cobalt blue
One of the plates depicts a typical Romantic Scene, a young couple lost in conversation under a three on a river bank. A landscape of an old town with a church across the river forms the intricate background
The other scene is much more unusual and sort of intriguing - three country kids, a girl and two boys, resting under a three after a day of harvesting. A large wheat or other grain stack is behind their backs, a sickle is thrown on the ground, one boy holds a canteen with water. They are obviously tired. A small cottage to the left completes the pastoral background
Circa mid/second half of the 18th century, unmarked, Netherlands
