This very unique bas-relief sculpture is portrayed in a classic baroque style. The work depicts eight frockling cherubs dancing about in the clouds There is a winged trumpeter on the right top side of the relief and on the far left there is also a winged cherub. The bas-relief is quite high, with some forms projecting one and a half inches from the background. The figurative relief is made of plaster. The beautiful golden wood frame is carved in sculptural forms that repeat the relief forms in the plaster artwork. The frame was a custom order, designed with reinforced braces, to hold the weight of the plaster bas-relief. The piece appears to have been made in America in the first half of the 20th century, however it may be of European origin. The plaster piece has a thin coat of light beige paint on it and because of its age, some flaking has appeared. However, a good artist should be able to restore the piece to its original patina. There is also some small damage to the foot of one of the cherubs. It is not very noticable, and it could be restored easily.
The cherub bas-relief was in our bathroom for over 40 years and it made a grand statement in our classical bedroom ensuite. The piece would fit in most rooms of any house that would need a classical bas-relief to enhance an area and to highlight the aesthetic of the Renaissance motifs. The bas-relief caught the attention of many of our visitors who were amazed to see it, as they had never seen such a grand and unique piece as this one.
The item was in storage. We we took it out, we noticed more paint flaking and small cracks. less
