Large Berlin Iron Works cast iron charger with mythological figures of goddesses, putti, various animals and fish in relief. The central medallion with cartouches of the first six months of the year, January through June. The outer rim decorated with figures of river goddesses holding fish and lobsters, as well as others with rams and cattle, and some holding the bounty of harvest. With a round hallmark on the reverse as well as a ring for hanging. Great decoration for a kitchen or dining room.
The Royal Ironworks (1804) became an important presence in Berlin’s rapidly developing urban landscape, and the production of cast iron began transforming the fabric of the city. From major landmarks and monuments to small decorative articles for the sitting rooms of an expanding middle class, cast iron was increasingly the material of choice. less
