The etchings of Barbara Phios are intricate portraits of nature that depict actual places. Selecting scenes with no evidence of the presence of man, she rarely alters the forms or designs created by the natural process of growth and the effects of weather. Her works give a feeling of tranquility and closeness to nature with a firmness of structure.
Barbara began etching professionally in 1981 and uses skills gained from over 40 years of drawing and painting. In her Elgin studio she uses traditional techniques as she creates the plate’s image and pulls the limited edition on her etching press. She completes a detailed line drawing on a hard-ground covered metal plate then etches the lines with acid. Powdered dammar gum is dusted on the clean plate and melted before she paints and etches the black and various tones of gray in ten separate steps. This procedure produces an aquatint that is very extensive, setting her work apart from the work of other contemporary etchers.
She exhibits widely in the Midwest and has received numerous awards of excellence. Her etchings are included in private, public and corporate art collections including the State of Illinois center, Comptroller of the Currency- Administrator of national Banks , Chicago Botanical Gardens, Kemper Group, McDonalds Corporation, Burroughs Corporation, International Minerals & Chemical Cooperation, American national Bank and Trust Company, Home Federal Savings and Loan, Graphic Chemical & Ink Company as well as others.
The etching is mated, #30/80, signed and titled in pencil by the artist.
It measures 32.5 X 25” framed and approximately 29X21.5 unframed.
This is a very elegant etching framed in a beautiful gilded frame. less
