Carl Buck (American, 20th C). An exceptionally well executed botanical oil painting of a gloxinia plant in a terra cotta pot - captures the essence of the Art Deco pre-war period. Naturalistic detail throughout - note leaves and flowers - with highly stylized background. Sympathetic choice of colors - very sophisticated treatment of an every day object. Beautiful French frame in the Louis XVI taste. Buck lived in the early 20th c. and was active in New York City. Known for botanicals, genre, figure, urban-landscape. Listed in Davenport's Art Reference Guide. Signed lower left "Carl Buck 34".
