Antique Spanish School Polychromed Carved Wood Shrine of a Madonna With Child in a Giltwood Niche, 19th Century. Extraordinary polychromed, carved wood 'Madonna with Child' in a carved, giltwood niche. Solid carved wooden Santos statue in high relief featuring a flowing red and blue robe in a polychrome finish. The Madonna or Virgin Mary has wonderful carving details throughout the dress, skin and facial expressions and a rich antique patina. The Child is settled on Mary’s proper right hip rather than her left. Niche features an angel at the pedestal base, carved Corinthian columns, scroll work, and a burgundy silk velvet background in the Spanish Baroque period style.
