An exceptional jasper ware bowl with three oval reserves depicting classical subjects - probably Adams or Turner factory - unmarked. Measures 6.25" in diameter x 3" tall. Excellent condition. Deep bas relief with neoclassical banding. The combination of chocolate brown and the crisp white bisque background is very smart. Similar to Wedgwood examples of the period - though slightly sharper and finer.
This piece commemorates the Napoleonic wars and Britain's role therein. Each of the three reserves tells a story. One shows an angel of peace and on her shield "HOWE" and "NELSON" for Earl Richard Howe (died 1799) and Lord Horatio Nelson (died 1805). Each distinguished himself in naval battles across the globe when Britain ruled the seas. The angel is in discourse with a figure representing war before an obelisk. The other two reserves symbolize birth - two cherubs playing with fire - and death - birds and an urn. less
