A finely executed 19th century Japanese bronze figure of the seated Buddha. Measures 5 1/2" tall x 5 1/4" across x 4" deep. Very heavy weight. Good condition and nice patina.
This figure is an Amida (or Amitābha) Buddha. The pose, the dhyana mudra (the hand position signifying meditation), the looping drapery with the chest mostly bared, and the hair style are all typically Japanese. An early monumental example is the Great Buddha in Kamakura.
