This sculpture from Amalia Schulthess is part of her Canto Series, c.1974, Los Angeles. The casting exhibits a fruit-breast style, displayed on a low platform, resembling giant spilled fruit. We can't help but see an heirloom tomato. "The work is intended to be studied closely and perhaps rearranged by the viewer, encouraging simultaneous viewing of the top, bottom and side views of identical but complex pieces, permitting the compression of understanding their sculptural identities." - Gerald Nordland (1976)
Amalia Schulthess, was a Swiss born artist and sculptor who immigrated to the USA in the early 1940's. She was best known for her large scale works of art. Originally a painter alongside friends like Georgia O’Keefe, Amalia transitioned to her 3D works of art at a friends recommendation who felt her work would translate better three dimensionally. Amalia honed her craft for sculpting in Pietrasanta, Italy where she felt in love with the medium of Carrara marble. Amalia continued to travel throughout her life often between Los Angeles, Italy, Bali and Indonesia, to find inspiration for her work, until her early 1990's.
