Colonial Spain granted land to the nobility of the Spanish Court to settle in the new world of California. The children of this Spanish nobility born in California, were called Californios. The nobility tried to keep the line pure with only the children of Spaniards or Californios who were allowed to marry.
Each thus keeping the land grants bound together in powerful family alliances. These families retained furniture and cabinet makers and bought to this country. Thus this table design is a result of centuries of Spanish & Moorish cultural history. This table sat in the dining room of my grandmother's home in La Jola California. In 1961, my grandfather had the plank ends of the top gently reinforced with briskets (small wooden discs inserted & glued) because my grandmother had a ritual, each fall, she would take very fine sand and mix with bee's wax which was softened in the sun to make putty, then gently rubbed this into the table to clean and preserve it. The base was nicely preserved with bee's wax thus it is now darker than it was years ago. Now we use "Yankee Hill Board Butter" for cleaning & conditioning. After she passed, the table traveled to my father's home in Monterey, California and then to my home in Palm Springs. My wife and I are now retired in the foothills of California, near Yosemite Valley. Our three sons are grown and have left California and are not interested in things of their heritage We do not have room in our small retirement home for this beautiful piece of history This is too important apiece to be in storage. This table would grace any casually elegant living space. Generations have grown up with fond memories around this beautiful hand crafted and carved iconic Colonial Refectory table.
Finish: Natural Patina, hand rubbed wax. Finish shows generous use as a vintage table should. It has never been sealed but left to develop its natural patina. The wood was left unfinished to breath and age with the passage of time. This shows respect for the aged wood and craftsmanship to bring out its own natural beauty. You will be pleased to have this meaningful piece in your home.
This table is constructed according to centuries old world methods, which can be disassembled and reassembled to be as sturdy as new. Solid wood construction. Leg supports are in very good, strong, sturdy, and intact with hand carved Lyre shaped legs with single stretcher at bottom of table..... structurally sound
No Makers mark or mark of origination. We feel it is of Spanish Colonial design, but not sure
of what Country it originated from.
The overhang of the top allows for very comfortable seating at either end. less
