This superb – finely hand-painted obento box (stacking dish) is from the Kyushu area in Japan. When I purchased this unusual special piece in 1986, it was 150-years old; therefore, now, it is almost 200 years old – a treasure. It has a “Certificate of Antiquity”, dated April 24, 1986 indicating 150 years old. While living in Japan 1975-1978 and, again, 1985-1988, I enjoyed visiting the antique stores in Japan – always searching for special pieces of antique porcelain with fine hand-painting. This is an example of a beautiful, exquisite example of detailed hand-painting. This piece would have been made for an affluent family to serve various dishes in each piece. I purchased this piece for its aesthetic qualities and have always enjoyed displaying this beautiful piece in my glass-front breakfront for all to visually enjoy its aesthetic beauty.
