She was born in Charleston, SC, the second child of Julia Ellen Craft and Herbert DeCosta, Sr., sister to the late Herbert DeCosta, Jr., and great granddaughter of Ellen and William Craft, author of Running a Thousand Miles to Freedom.
She was a graduate of Avery Institute in 1941 and earned a B.S. at Simmons College, Boston in 1945. She studied at Traphagen School of Fashion the following year.
Bernice taught art and fashion design at Spelman College, Atlanta, GA for three years where she met and in 1948, married Dr. Albert Miles Davis, a graduate of Howard University Medical School. Following their divorce, she obtained a M.A. at Columbia University in 1956 and taught at Burke High School until 1962 when she moved to Greensboro, NC with her daughters where she embarked upon her career as a guidance counselor. She received a M.A. in Guidance and Counseling at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.
From 1970-1981, she counseled students in Montgomery County Public Schools, MD and returned to Charleston where she was a counselor at Trident Technical College until retiring in 1989.
During her years of retirement, she enjoyed calligraphy commissions, as well as, painting with water colors and oils. Until her illness, Bernice was active in the community as a member of the Preservation Society of Charleston, Commission on Art and History, Elliotborough Neighborhood Association, Historic Charleston Foundation Advisory Committee, the MUSC Advisory Committee, the Carolina Lettering Arts Society, Washington Calligraphers Guild, Entre Nous Bridge Club, The Links, Inc. and Alpha Kappa Alpha.
