Philadelphia-trained Samuel Kirk launched the "Repousse" silverware pattern in 1828, making it the oldest sterling silver pattern produced in the United States. The pattern is named after the relief ornament of the same name. Repousse is achieved by hammering from the under or inner side of the metal, then chasing from the top side to achieve greater detail.
