There are some cracks in the wood of the seat where it attaches to the leg on the right side. The wood piece under the seat also has a crack in the same area near the opposite leg. There are some vertical cracks in the wood beneath the circle back. The edges of the red fabric seat near the studs is showing signs of wear on three of the four edges. The ebony finish has been worn off in areas all over the wood. One of the baby rattle finials broke off and was repaired. less

Uncertain of the exact pedigree of this chair, one might estimate that it's from the late 19th century Victorian or Eastlake era. Victorian pieces often included elaborate carvings, embellishments and ornamentation but this one is particularly eye catching due to the baby rattle finials and rondelettes. The wood has been ebonized or stained black to simulate ebony.
Though not as refined as designs by George Hunzinger, the Herter Brothers or Carlo Bugatti this “fancy” chair may have been created with their aesthetic in mind. This attractive and unusual chair is from a time when designs were created to anticipate the modern age and ended up as the visionary prototype to so many of our 20th century favorites.
With the exception of some traditional decorative elements of nature such as the leaves across the top of the back, pure form is a focus of this chair, and it works splendidly today in a modern setting. less
