Finely hand-crafted in Paris, France in the the late 18th / possibly early 19th century, exceptionally executed in opulent period King Louis 16th taste, the large barometer features a hand carved and sculpted dark green painted parcel gilt wooden case, having a ribbon crest pediment accented with water gilded acanthus leaf, floral foliate, scroll flourish openwork and other Neoclassical decorative elements.
Retaining the hand painted Reaumur-scale thermometer over circular barometer dial with metal hands, the face inscribed Selon Torricelly, protected behind convex glazed glass set giltwood bezel encasing. The back of the shaped barometer case consists of wood slat construction with beams to either side and a metal wall hanger affixed to the verso.

As the inscription on the dial indicates, it is thanks to the mechanism created in 1644 by the renowned Italian scientist, physicist and mathematician Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647). A student of Galileo, whom he met and resided with in Florence, Italy during the last few months of his life, Torricelli is best known for his work that led to the first speculations about atmospheric pressure, and to the corollary invention of the barometer. He is also known for his advances in optics and work on the method of indivisibles.
A superb example of functional art, this extraordinary, well preserved work presents wonderfully. At over three feet tall, this impressive fine quality antique is a true statement piece!
