This is an antique pair of Rococo Revival gilt-brass girandole candlesticks with cut-glass prisms on marble bases. They are stamped Cornelius & Co. Patent April 10, 1849. The production date is 1848/51. The couple is a depiction of pioneer times derived from James Fenimore Cooper's Last of the Mohicans (Leatherstocking Tales). The set of girandoles originally consisted of three pieces. The two remaining pieces are Major Duncan Heyward (the man) who set out to free the abducted Cora Munro (the woman).
The manufacturer Cornelius and Company was active in Philadelphia from 1839–1851. The designer was Isaac F. Baker (c. 1806–1883). Gilt girandoles adorned countless parlor mantelpieces and tables in mid-19th century American homes. And these rare remaining figures are very interesting.
