Midcentury c. 1960s Italian Venini blue glass ice bucket with bollecini (air bubbles).
Almost 100 years ago in 1921, Paolo Venini began VENINI glass company in Murano, Italy, an island off the coast of Venice and home to many of the most renowned glassblowers of the 20th Century.
Early mid 20th C. glassblowers were modernizing the ancient form of glassblowing by experimenting with new techniques, colors and forms. Bollecini (Italian for air bubbles) was one of the early techniques created by Venini. Injections of potassium nitrate creates tiny bubbles of carbon dioxide that is prevalent in Venini glass and adopted by many other glass blowers of the time.
