Tea is an important staple of Chinese culture. Tea jars or tea caddies can be found in many Chinese households. These rectangular porcelain tea jar feature cobalt blue sketches of a coastal landscape. Mountains and birds dot the skyline, giving the landscape an earthly feel. Each panel features a classic Chinese village scene with prominent willow trees and clusters of homes. In China, the willow tree symbolizes immortality and rebirth. Many of the figures are participating in some form of fishing, whether that’s with a rod, a net, or even on a boat. This daily activity demonstrated the harmony between humanity and nature in Chinese culture. Decorative flowers grace the borders as well as the top of the vase. On the front of one of the panels, are Chinese symbols that represent the Kangxi emperor. The lid mimics the panels’ imagery, pulling the entire design together.
