Melvin Whitsett Carter was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on November 19, 1930, to Mallory and Claudia Carter. By the time he was seven years old he knew he wanted to be an artist. He graduated from Parker High School in Birmingham in 1948 as a straight "A" student. After high school, Carter attended Miles University in Birmingham for one year. Unfortunately, he could not pursue art as a course of study there. With the aid of his mother, he was able to get a scholarship to Evansville University in Evansville, Illinois where he could study art. After a year at Evansville University, Carter decided that he needed a change. Accordingly, he joined the United States Air Force in 1950. He knew that after his military service, he could go back to school on the G.I. Bill. In 1960, after two tours of duty, Carter went to the University of Illinois, Champagne, on a scholarship. He graduated in 1963 with a BFA in Art Education. In 1965 Carter left Illinois and headed to his new home in Denver, Colorado. A previous trip through the western United States convinced him that he wanted to live there. He was fascinated by the beauty of the scenery and the quality of the light. Upon arrival in Denver, Carter managed to get a job teaching art as a substitute teacher in the Denver Public School System. He landed a semester long position teaching art at Manual High School. He ended up teaching in Denver Public Schools for the next four years. In 1969 he took a position with the Community College of Denver. After 20 plus years with CCD Carter retired but did not give up teaching art. He was an Artist/Instructor for the Art Students League of Denver until his death in January 1998. During his career, Carter participated in over 70 exibitions. He also juried many shows, as well. He was the recipient of numerous awards as both an artist and an educator.
