A Naive folk Art painting by Jone', dated 1975. Jone' paints a refreshing portrait of a young gentleman dressed in a heavily patched overcoat, overalls, and knotted scarf. He is holding his hat and leaning against a panel wall or door. At his feet to the right is a corked jug like those used for moonshine in the olden days. A 'sippin jug', as my father would say. Well done, Jone'!
The painting is on a single sheet of canvas glued to piece of cardboard and in very good condition. The frame is probably the original frame. .
Painting: 10 X 14 X 1/8th inches
Frame: 13 1/4 X 17 1/4 X 1 1/2 inches
Jone’s painting may be an homage to an 1840s lithograph by William Sidney Mount (1807-1868) called The Power of Music
The Power of Music is a colored lithograph showing the outside and inside of a barn or stable, where two well dressed white men listen, smiling, to a young white fellow in a Union Army cap and shirt sleeves, play the fiddle / violin. Just outside the open stable door, out of sight of the three men, a black man leans against the stable door listening to the music. He is wearing a heavily patched coat, older shoes, overalls and a bit of a smile on his face. Just behind him, on the ground sits an empty glass jug anext to a hatchet resting against the wall. Jone’s painting echoes his stance and demeanor. It is possible that the fiddle player has been demobbed. If so, they may be celebrating the end of the Civil War and the fellow outside listening in is no doubt a free man! less
