A fantastic and large tall Chinese 'Martaban' Storage Urn. Martaban jars are common stoneware storage pots named after the Arabic pronunciation of the Burmese port on the gulf of Pegu through which many of these vessels were traded. .These large jars were made near port towns for shipping convenience in the southern Chinese coastal provinces of Kwangtung, Fukien and Chekiang.
This martaban is decorated with swimming carp holding rings in high-relief. Glazed stoneware on the inside and out.
The conservative age is estimated mid-20th c.1960s though can be older.
A wonderful specimen.
