'Royal Mandarin' is based on the Old Dutch Masters. Where painters in the 17th century made their 'piece the resistance' in still-life lavishly and richly decorated, this work is a wink to the past. The folded lace fabric, the tin milk jug and the mandarins are objects that were often included in the paintings as symbols of wealth. Placing these object in a minimalistic environment, in a delicate balanced composition Marlou hopes to show the real beauty of used objects in daily life. She searches for tranquility, wondering and giving attention to the purity in life.
