Cornelis Theodorus Maria Kees Van Dongen ( 1877 - 1968 ) was a Dutch - French painter who was one of the leading Fauvists. His early work was influenced by The Hague School and Symbolism, later evolving into a more radical style in its use of form, color, and subject matter. His most important works are from the period of 1905 - 1910, with themes predominately focused on the nightlife, painting dancers, singers, masquerades and theater. Van Dongen earned a solid reputation with the French bourgeoisie and upper class for his sensual and lush colors of the Fauvist style as part of the Avant Garde wave of painters.
In 1905 Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, Maurice De Vlaminck, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy, and Kees Van Dongen exhibited their highly innovative paintings at the controversial Salon D'Automne. The vivid, unnatural colors led the art critic Louis Vauxcelles to name their work as " Les Fauves ", or " The Wild Beasts ", marking the start of The Fauvist Movement.
