The Buddha is meditating in the classic lotus position, with his legs crossed and holding a bowl in his hands. Before Buddha appeared on Earth, the bowl was the symbol of renunciation or sadhus in India. The bowls themselves were traditionally made of iron or clay, but over the centuries they have been made of many materials. In keeping with the bowl symbolism, the simpler the bowl, the more it serves the purpose. Buddha images often show him holding a prayer bowl. Perfect condition, excellent patina. See less
