Antique late 1800s English walnut side table featuring ball and claw feet, barley twist legs and a barley twist X-stretcher support. Originally established in the early 1600s in France and England this decorative style is only possible with certain types of wood species, including walnut. This design requires a skilled artisan and is achieved by hand or on a wood lathe, with additional hand finishing required. The style was revived in the 1800s and mid 1900s throughout Europe and North America. This particular traditional English table dates to the late 1800s and is in beautiful, solid condition with all original hardware and finish (maker unknown). There are four, club-shaped carve outs on the buttresses under the beveled-edge table top. There is one drawer, fashioned with a metal drawer pull, embossed with flowers and wheat. The table top appears to be a perfect square, but measures 23.5 x 24 inches-- a testament to it being handmade and not machine manufactured. The table top separates ever so slightly from the support buttresses on two corners, but this is only seen on close inspection and the table top is secure.
This antique is in overall very good condition with one manual repair worth noting. When you remove the drawer entirely from its cubby, you'll see that the back corner of the drawer has been glued to support a fracture in the wood. This repair does not affect the functionality of the piece; and can only be seen if you remove the drawer entirely and examine the back interior.
The previous owner was a 5th generation wood worker and historian and says that the table was a family heirloom. Beyond repairing the drawer they said they applied beeswax to condition the wood and preserve its unique patina.
