Antique oil on canvas laid board after the original painting by John Singer Sargent (Italian/American, 1856-1925) titled "Ellen Peabody Endicott (Mrs. William Crowninshield Endicott), 1901". The original painting is housed at the National Gallery of Art, West Building, Main Floor, Gallery 69. This work is unsigned and housed in an antique gilt gesso picture frame. The estimated age of the painting is the early 20th century. The frame measures 26" x 34" x 2.5". The board is 19.75" x 28".
From the National Galley of Art:
"Combining technical brilliance with an intimate portrait of its subject, Ellen Peabody Endicott exemplifies Sargent’s mannered society portraiture. Mrs. Endicott is shown seated in an upholstered chair beside a small wooden table topped with a book and other personal effects. The crimson curtain backdrop and Mrs. Endicott’s embroidered shawl demonstrate Sargent’s expertise in rendering fabric textures and draping. A heavy black mourning dress hints at a possible reason for the sitter’s melancholy expression: the recent death of her husband." less
