Introduction: by Kaz Maslanka
While all of these works use the photographic process the majority of them were
shot using a Mamiya RB67. That said, one could argue these works are closer to
painting than traditional photography. In a camera, there are two ways to control the
light coming into the camera. The first is the aperture which is a round hole behind
the camera lens and it operates the same as the pupil in your eye (which is also
behind the lens of your eye). To let in less light the hole gets smaller in both cases.
The second method to let light in the camera is the shutter and it operates similar to
your eyelid. If you start off with your eyes closed and then blink closing your eye
again, then you just mimicked the process of a camera taking a photo. The film or
digital sensor is like the retina of your eye and the light makes an impression on it.
The sensor on a camera records the light and in the case of your eye, the retina
transforms the light into electrical signals sent to the brain for processing. The brain
makes sense of those signals thus giving you the reality of your environment. The process used in these works is called time exposure photography whereby the
shutter is locked open for extended periods of time as opposed to a traditional photo
in which the shutter is open for small fractions of a second. The shutter was open
between 2 and 15 minutes in these images. During that time I took flashlights of
various sizes and styles, covered them with theatrical gels (providing the color), and
bounced light from the body of the model to the camera.
