I really love working on large paintings. To have the space to move more freely and express myself and not be confined to a small area to paint is really exciting. I would even like to work on larger paintings than this one, but it was a wonderful experience for me to work on such a much larger canvas than I usually use.
I also like working with chalk paint, which I used for most of this painting. It is very soft and fluid and I love the texture of it and how it applies to a canvas. The colors of chalk paint are very unusual. It is a very soft and calming kind of paint, really. Working with some of my favorite colors for this painting was very inspiring, too. Blue is truly my favorite color, many different shades of blue.
I often do not have any idea of what subject matter I am going to use for my paintings when I start on them. This one was no exception. I try to just rely on my imagination and also the memories of my childhood and the things that have inspired me throughout my life.....to help me when I begin a painting. As I worked on this painting, a story began to develop and I could see what I was trying to say, subconsciously and spiritually really. I feel that my paintings are spiritual reflections of what I am feeling and what is important to me in my life. Beginning with the color of blue and then using white, I could later see that this painting was about an angel who was protecting me. Then a journey began to come into the picture and there, I started using other colors: brown, ochre and black. Colors often seem to tell me what the painting is going to be about, there is a language to color which can speak to us.
To me, what this painting is about is the future, my future and a journey or adventure I might experience, either actually traveling somewhere or simply growing in my life. To me, this painting is very important to what I am trying to accomplish in my life. The guardian angel is there to help me and to protect me. I have always felt that I have a guardian angel. less
