Rare portrait work by recognized landscape artist Nicholas Briganti.
Oil on panel 17" x 24" – original frame - 19.75” x 25.75”
"Portrait of a Woman with Lute and Bernese Dogs" (Circa 1900-20).
Painting probably dates to the early 1900's when Briganti travelled through many areas of Italy.
The setting is in a mountainous region perhaps in northern Italy near the alps but could also be a villa near the Amalfi coast, Briganti painted several iconic paintings in this region.
Beautifully executed figures of two exquisitely detailed St. Bernard dogs and a female figure with a lute. Wonderful detail is evident throughout the composition.
Delicate plays of color, light and shadow which Briganti perfected in his landscapes of Venice in the 1920’s.
Origins/Provenance – from a prominent family in Texas.
Frame has a label from “Gimbel Brothers Picture Store” where it was probably originally purchased in the early 1900’s – no address was listed, so it is possibly from one of the original Gimbels stores in Milwaukee or Philadelphia, pre-dating the store in New York City.
Minor damage from nails on the back of the panel and one very small chip in lower right corner. Wear is consistent with age for a piece from this era. (see photos) less
