A relief is a sculptural technique that gives the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. The Foo Dog in particular is actually a lion and are considered guardians of the Temple. Typically they are kept in pairs of two, male and female representing the Yin and Yang energies.
Chinese reliefs have a diverse range of themes, depicting mythical, spiritual beings as well as depictions of people, such as the king and queen, princes, priests, courtiers, soldiers, servants, and commoners. These bas-relief sculptures have served as a reference for historians in the study of ancient Chinese architecture, weaponry, fashion, and transportation and provide a glimpse for us of everyday ancient Chinese life.
This particular relief has a thick three dimensional form and is raised 2 inches above the mat. It's in gorgeous condition and displayed on a gilded frame with a bamboo background.
