This is an original ceramic work by Christine LePage. The title is uncertain but it could be "Wall Piece with Female Figure." It is artist signed and dated on the bottom of the piece. Ms LePage received a B.S. degree in Art Education, University of Wisconsin=Stout in 1971. Active as a potter since 1975, she has also taught ceramics and art throughout her career.
Quote: "My most recent pieces deal with images that are subjected to change: Change of direction as they flow over sculpted surfaces, and change of mood as the fire and smoke interact with their glossy and matte surfaces."
The circular disk features a female figure on the left spread over positive and negative space. Geometric patterns occupy the rest of the space/ The earth tones employed are orange, red, beige and grey. The object is low=fired and unglazed. The application of design is done in several steps. When the piece is partially dried, it is burnished with a stone to achieve a smooth finish, then painted with a refined clay slip terra sigillata or earth seal.. It is a similar slip used by ancient potters in Greece, Rome and indigenous potters in North and South America.
One has to view this object, not as a piece of pottery, but as an artistic expression executed on clay. The artist Christine LePage could have easily painted this idea on canvas, but she chose the medium of clay for her idea which is much more of a challenge. less
