- Incredibly stylish 1950 Italian high ladder back, low seat, pair of chairs in the manner of iconic designer Gio Ponti … more Incredibly stylish 1950 Italian high ladder back, low seat, pair of chairs in the manner of iconic designer Gio Ponti for Chiavari, Italy. Elegant black wooden frame with tapering legs and tall shaped tapering backrest. Original woven rush seats in good condition. The chairs, with the low seat, make fantastic sculptural accent pieces and as fireside chairs, as accent chairs in a living room, or foyer, or bedroom. The first Chiavari chairs were made in 1807 and these Chiavari chairs are famous for their light but strong and elegant frames. In the 1950s and 1960s Gio Ponti and Sanguineti used the principles of the superleggera Chiavari chairs for their own designs. Provenance-assembled from our family's Maryland estate, The Edith Hale Harkness estate. The Harkness Family was among 19th century America's first philanthropic society families as financiers to Rockefeller and Flagler for Standard Oil, endowing the Harkness Ballet, the Harkness Pavilion, the Harkness Library, etc. Continue the Story!
