Description: This mid-century coffee and dessert set was produced in the area of Obori Nami, Futaba district, Fukushima prefecture of Japan. … more This mid-century coffee and dessert set was produced in the area of Obori Nami, Futaba district, Fukushima prefecture of Japan. Obori Somayaki is characterized by its beautiful blue-green crackle glaze, gold horses, and its double-walled structure.
Pottery began being made in this area of Japan in the 1600s. In the 1800’s the gold horses were added to honor the feudal lord Soma and the wild horse chases the area was famous for. The unique intricate and difficult to crate double-walled structure was also created in the 1800s. The double-wall serves the practical purpose of keeping the coffee or tea hot and your hands cool while drinking and serving.
