Sun Dashi 大石, known under the brush name Sun Ying, was born in the Shandong Province of China and by 1949 was based in Taipei as a successful artist where he was involved in the founding of several painting societies, such as the Chinese Association of Ink Painting, and was the recipient of the Golden Cup Award by Taiwan.

Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Ying exhibited widely and with success, including in Australia, Brazil, Germany, Malaysia and the United States. In 1974, he moved to the United States, where he lived in the San Francisco Bay Area until 1982 when Ying returned to China. Ying exhibited with success in the Soviet Union (1984), in Japan's 22nd exhibition of Contemporary Art (1988), the Tokyo Art Museum (1991) and in the Art Museum of China (1993). In the 1990s, Sun Ying was a researcher for the China Central Institute for Culture and History. The Sun Dashi Museum opened in his honor in 2000.
