Irreverent, subversive, politically incorrect, poetic, romantic in its own way, capable of creating new rules in the use and sale of a work of art: the whole story of the most famous and mysterious street artist in the world is told for the first time. in the film "Banksy, the art of rebellion", which was expected in Italian cinemas on 26, 27 and 28 October. Produced by Spiritlevel Cinema and distributed by Adler Entertainment, directed by Elio España, the film brings the audience closer to the life and art of Banksy, a pioneer artist of Street Art whose identity still remains a mystery to everyone.
Of Bansky, born as an artist in the underground scene of Bristol, England, little is known officially, even if over the years a lot has been said about him, between truth and legends: certainly his works, true and proper, speak clearly for him. contemporary icons, whose expressive power is unmistakable, as well as their political value. From power to war, from capitalism to violence, from alienation to religious and political fundamentalism, all the themes that animate Banksy's works are uncomfortable and highly topical: to him the merit of declining them through a language that goes beyond nations and speaks to everyone, without distinction, even making himself and his works the protagonists of courageous and audacious forays that have outraged the establishment. The film tells his story from the very beginning, with his first graffiti and street art works dating back to 1990, all the way to today's multimillion-dollar empire, created by transforming the Street Art movement into a mainstream art form. Alongside a rare archive from private collections, the film also composes a series of important unpublished interviews with personalities closely linked to Banksy, including those with Steve Lazarides, an art promoter and his former right-hand man, the renowned artist Ben Eine, one of his closest collaborators, and John Nation, who managed the graffiti project in which his story began.
"I think there are a lot of misconceptions about Banksy and his anonymity has a lot to do with that," said writer and director Elio España, "People don't think of Banksy as a graffiti artist, he isn't anymore, but his origins absolutely come from that world. His art is not alienated from the context, he is the fruit of his background in Bristol and of the culture and politics of this time ".
"Banksy has completely changed the way artwork is displayed and sold - he added - I believe that by understanding his story, you will also gain a much deeper understanding of his work."
