This is a great piece. I have actually owned another patrick archer work in the past that hung in my house for a long time. His works are excellent and this one is actually one of the best I have come across. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This is a wonderful mixed media and collage on paper measuring 22 x 16 inches. Signed and dated lower right corner. Painting is in outstanding condition, as it was created. Really a very fine work. The painting is floated in an archival backing and matte that makes for a great presentation. Simple metal frame is complimentary and ready to hang. On the back of the frame is the original label from irving galleries in west palm beach in florida as well as the biographical handout that probably came with the painting on the gallery's letterhead. Really just a great presentation and complete package. Frame measures 28 1/2 x 22 1/2 inches.
For those not familiar with the artist, his biography from a dealer who sells the artist's work reads: "palm beach florida artist patrick archer (b. 1926). Archer studied at the california college of arts and crafts (mfa) archer has exhibited widely including recent exhibitions at the vero beach museum of art, the boca raton museum, and the merrill lynch gallery in new york. Archer's work is in the collections of the albright knox gallery (a work similar to the one offered here), vero beach museum of art, the silvermine guild, and the society of four arts in palm beach.
Taught painting, drawing, design, architecture, history & appreciation, and introduced a concentrated program in color and theory (under the advisory-guidance of faber birren.) he likens the production of a collage to a symphony orchestra conductor, who takes a wide variety of individual, professional musicians and "blends" them into a uniquely new expression. These collages utilize disparate elements taken from magazines, catalogs, books, brochures, old billboard scrapings, and whatever other sources (even discarded paintings) and reconstitutes them into original works. William zimmer, a contributing critic for the new york times, said of his work, "archer has a pile of advertising posters and other detritus in his backyard which he allows to grow moldy, and this becomes organic. When he uses material treated this way in a work it has a certain authority because it comes out of the earth. He likens his predilection for venerable-looking components to leonardo's delight in 'little adventures,' such as stained walls. Like da vinci, archer rejects little, for his working attitude means the eventual subordination of intellectual choices to the surprise of randomness." less
