This is one of 5 works I acquired by well listed stain glass artist john gordon guthrie. Born into a prominent scottish stained glass family he moved to america around the turn of the century. The best biography I was able to find was from a history of duffner and kimberly.
Another important stained glass artist of the firm was john gordon guthrie (1874-1961), a scottish immigrant, known professionally as "j. Gordon guthrie", who first worked for tiffany. Guthrie had designed windows for tiffany studios and also designed windows for duffner & kimberly. A large, early example of his stained glass windows, dating from 1910 while he was employed by the duffner & kimberly firm, is found in grace and holy trinity cathedral, the cathedral church of the episcopal diocese of west missouri, located in kansas city, missouri. Guthrie left tiffany in 1906 and worked for the duffner & kimberly company until 1914. He then worked with henry wynd young (1874-1923) until young's death in 1923, when guthrie took over the management of young's studio. Guthrie began his own firm in 1925, and was active as a stained glass designer until his death on june 23, 1961.
If you google the artist you will find other information about him including where you can find his stained glass throughout new york city and other cities. This is an oil on linen panel that measures 16 x 20 inches. Signed and dated lower left. Entire canvas shows spotting particularly in the lower half. The bottom back edge of the linen is loose from the canvas but can easily be reglued. Seems like it would clean up pretty well and with a frame it would be a really special painting. Overall very displayable painting- especially with rarity do your research on this artist and you will find a great deal of information and virtually none of his work on the market or having ever been sold. I probably have the only 5 pieces that are available on the market. Make sure you check my other auctions for the other ones I am selling. less
