I like to by works of important regional artists especially artists that the work is very rare and hard to find. This fits into that category perfectly. Floyd brewer was an important minnesota artist. His biography from minnesota prints and printmakers reads: "a mural tapestry designer, painter, teacher, and lecturer, floyd brewer was born in coin, iowa. A pioneer in abstract painting, he got his early raining in the twin cities, later studying in paris, munich, and mexico. He was active in minneapolis and st paul from the 1930s through the 1950s. In 1960, brewer moved to gig harbor, washington where he and his wife margarth, operated floymar studio and gave television and radio lectures on art. He studied at minneapolis school of art, st paul school of art with cameron booth, hans hoffman, ferdinand leger, wassilly kandinsky, and diego rivera." There is much more detail in the book if you google it. His work is in the collections of minnesota historical society, walker art center minneapolis, st paul gallery of art, minneapolis institute of arts, university of minnesota and the treasury department washington dc. He was exhibited extensively throughout the midwest. Including multiple times at the walker art center. This painting has an original label on the back from one of the biennial of paintings prints and sculpture. The label is partially torn so I cannot figure out which year this was. In searching the center's website, I found a solo exhibition in 1950 but could not find which biennial this was from. On the label it is titled and written that this was painted by floyd brewer of gig harbor, wa which leads me to believe this was exhibited after 1960. Perhaps the 1962 biennial. This is an oil masonite measuring 35 x 14 1/2 inches. Signed lower right corner. Painting is in outstanding original as painted condition. Perhaps just a few very small areas of surface grime but really an incredible original painting. Original simple black frame is complimentary and ready to hang. There is a piece of tape on the back of the frame that has an inscription giving the painting to someone. Just a great rare original regionalist abstract work. Frame measures 36 x 15 3/4 inches. less
