Wonderful early watercolor on paper measuring 6 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches. Signed and dated lower right. Painting shows no signs of having been in any direct sunlight. Very vibrant. There does show to be a very minor matte burn box around the edge where it meets the original matte but otherwise as painted condition. Original matte and frame show some minor soiling but nothing too bad. Ready to hang. I have not removed the painting from the frame but the paper shows that it is not laid down. Frame measures 15 1/4 x 16 1/2 inches. Not exactly sure of the location of this lighthouse but he worked up and down the massachusetts and maine coast. Could be any one of the many along that trip.
For those not familiar with woodward, his biography from peter falk in who's who in american art reads: "rockport (massachusetts) painter and illustrator, stanley wingate woodward (1890-1970) was well recognized for his marines and seascapes. He was the author of "adventures in marine painting" (1948) and "marine painting in oil and watercolor" (1961). He was an illustrator for collier's and ford times magazines. He was an instructor at the woodward outdoor painting school (1935 -); ringling art school (1937-38); and the laguna beach school art & design (1963). He exhibited widely, including the pennsylvania academy, corcoran gallery, national academy, boston museum of fine arts, etc. He was awarded many prizes, national academy, american watercolor society, baltimore watercolor society, rockport art association, north shore art association, etc. less
