I recently acquired a small collection of works by john stephen cipot that were de-accessed from a museum in connecticut. All 5 works date to 1964, the year cipot became a professor of art at the university of connecticut. Cipot attended fairfield prepatory school and then got his degree in fine arts at rhode island school of design. He continued his education, receiving a masters of fine arts from university of southern california. While in california he specialized in pottery and sculpture and was exhibited at scripps college as well as other locations. He then went into the navy and served during world war 2. He was also involved in the naval artists civilian program. Many of his works are in the permanent collection of the us navy art collection. During his tenure at univeristy of connecticut, he exhibited throughout the northeast at shows during the 1970s and 1980s. His work is in collections throughout the united states, though very rarely comes to the market.

This is a classic period abstract expressionist drawing from 1964. Graphite on paper with the image measuring 26 1/4 x 20 inches. Signed and dated lower right corner. The work is in excellent clean condition with just some very minor smudging of the graphite. Pretty much exactly as the artist produced it. A few minor edge bumps and tears. Very minor. Artist's name and university of connecticut information in pencil verso. Archival matte and frame would make this an outstanding addition to any abex collection.
