Exquisitely hand-crafted in the early 20th century, solid wooden construction, octagonal tapered form with a pair of cutout handles, rising on molded edge base. The scarce vintage bin, circa 1920s to early 1930s, features alternating panels of highly figured flame mahogany and rich solid mahogany with lovely grain detail and warmth. Signed, "SK" within a circle logo marked to base, "63" "63437"

Brief company history:
Schmieg & Kotzian were master craftsmen, established in 1897, the company was active until 1954. They established a furniture firm in business in London, England from 1899 to 1907, when they moved to New York. After Karl Schmieg died in 1949, the company continued on for a few more years, but was then sold. Both Karl Schmieg and Heinrich Kotzian were German cabinet makers, who were trained in the traditional European apprentice system. They were renouned for their exquisite design and superior quality traditional hand-craftmanship. Among pieces of traditional furniture, they also made cabinets for Steinway pianos.
