This cutie belonged to my mom, who was an avid Blue Ridge Southern Potteries collector. The playful pattern, Suwanee, consists of an assortment of Pansy and Iris flowers on both the front and back with a whimsical medley of vines, leaves and other foliates scattered about the rest of the jug. Handcrafted sometime in the mid to late 1940s, the Suwanee pattern will only be found on the Grace jug and because each piece was hand painted, no two jugs will ever be alike. It is believed that Blue Ridge Southern Potteries created between 4,000 and 5,000 different patterns, however, most of the records have been lost or destroyed over the years. Another quirky fact, the company did not name the patterns because they operated basically on a numbering system. Most patterns have been given names by collectors over the years, therefore, you might have a description in a reference guide that refers to a pattern by one name and then find the same design in another source listed with a different name. The circular makers mark on the bottom of the jug made its appearance after 1945. It measures 5½” high; 6½” handle-to-handle width; 3” base diameter; 3” lip diameter; capacity 2½ cups/20 oz.; weight 1 lb.; crafted from hand painted bisque china; colors are muted shades of periwinkle, lavender, blush, leaf green, mint green with black accents on a milky white background; handcrafted in Erwin, TN. In excellent condition with minimal use wear evident. A few mini mottled spots can be found on the interior if you’re looking for them, not uncommon in vintage pottery. If you’re a collector of Blue Ridge Southern Potteries jugs or pitchers, this cutie will be a great addition that that collection!
