The expressions … more This is a pair of vintage Chinese porcelain statues of boys carrying offerings are post-1940..They are so charming. The expressions seem so realistic. One boy holds a peach, and the other has a dish of foods. In Chinese mythology, peaches represent immortality. Both boys stand on standing on gourds, symbols of protection and good fortune. The red dot on their foreheads is also related to an important first writing ceremony of enlightenment which takes place before a child enters school.
The red dot represented opening the wisdom eye, since the word 'dot' is pronounced the same as "wisdom' in Chinese.”
Gourds were used in China as charms for scaring away negative spirits and diseases.
The pieces are 9.5 inches tall and 4.75 inches wide. less
