Tomkins, who worked in dot and stipple style, served as historical engraver to Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, queen consort of George III. Titled ‘The Morning,’ this hand-colored print, based on an earlier work by English painter and illustrator William Hamilton (1751-1801), depicts the morning activities of women and children in the English countryside.

The print itself has aged very well, having evenly browned up to edge of the matting, which shows heavier and somewhat uneven browning. See photos. Very nice and well-maintained gold frame with only minor imperfections - slight edge and corner scuffing and small loss of frame detail in one spot at the bottom edge. These imperfections do not interfere with the look of the piece and only serve to enhance its antique character. less
