Extremely fine antique 18th Century mezzotint engraving on handmade paper depicting a portrait of Christiana Elisabeth Mentzelin who born March … Read more Extremely fine antique 18th Century mezzotint engraving on handmade paper depicting a portrait of Christiana Elisabeth Mentzelin who born March 1, 1702 and died September 13, 1756. She was a courtiers' wife at Berbisdorf, Germany. We just love her expression and demeanour.
It is signed on the lower left by C. W. Seydel and lower right by J. M. Bernigeroth and dated 1757.
18th Century. Unframed.
The condition is very good for age. Very minor signs of age in places. Protective matting is dis-colored.

Further reading: Mezzotint was the first tonal process to be used in printmaking and allowed the engraver to do produce subtle shadings utilizing half-tones without the need for line-or dot-based techniques.
